BREASTFEEDING PROBLEMS?
Jan 29, 2025
Are you struggling with breastfeeding? You are not alone. Breastfeeding takes a lot of work, effort and it can be mentally and physically draining. Some mothers struggle with latch, low milk supply, oral restrictions, poor sleep, mental health, or painful nipples. It is rare for me to do a consultation with a breastfeeding mother who isn’t crying. You are right…..it can be difficult. But, there is hope! Here are a few things you might want to consider:
- FIND A GOOD LACTATION CONSULTANT who is an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) who can help you get through the hurdles of breastfeeding.
- FIND A CHEERLEADER who can cheer you on, bring you food, help hold the baby while you rest, etc. Having someone in your corner is a game changer.
- EAT WELL because a mother who is breastfeeding needs enough calories to make milk and also to help her heal from delivery.
- HYDRATE WELL by having water to drink every time you breastfeed or pump.
- REST OFTEN and let your partner or support person be with your baby (and watch for feeding cues) while you get your much needed rest.
- PROTECT YOUR MILK SUPPLY. If your baby is not breastfeeding well or you are separated, get pumping. Pump every 3 hours for 15-20 minutes to tell your body to continue to make milk.
- THERE IS HOPE. I have helped thousands of mothers who didn’t know if they could continue breastfeeding……and they did. And for some mothers, knowing when to stop is a good thing, too.
